What are you guys doing for helmets nowadays?
Had to get rid of the SA2010. Looking at the SA2020 Bell M8 as a great allrounder option. There were some nice budget options as well with Zamp and Conquer. Anyone tried those? I'm a little hesitant to try one of the budget helmets...
I think i'm in a Gforce... but i had to get mine ASAP, it was right when the 2020s were released, and it was the only one in stock (i'm local to OGracing) for my rookie year... yada yada
The big bonus now is they all come with built in HANS attachment points. Lucky mine did also, but some of the other budget ones didnt (they probably do now).
I'll say buy the cheapest one that has the options you need... and some people will say... "you need to protect your mellon"... well, thats true, but it starts with your cage not your helmet. At this point if i'm relying on my helmet i'm hosed... All the budget ones are rated the same as the others...
the differences might be... weight (usually material changes and design changes), field of view, AND options (visors, air in put, etc.). I have no issues with weight (18 inch short neck) and i dont need air input and stuff like that... so as long as i could get replacement visors and it had a wide opening i was good.
Also, every exit drill i tag my helmet on the halo bar (at least on the old cage) and i didnt want to spend +$600 and scuff it up every other race (we get tested a lot)

I'm using a Stilo currently which I love, but it's out of date at the end of this year. I'll probably replace it with something more affordable when the time comes; there's a lot more out there with the same features at a much lower price point now than when I originally bought.
I don't skimp on safety gear and the helmet is the most important IMO.
Arai GP6 or GP7, haven't gotten to the point where i can justify a carbon lid yet cause man those are some serious cheddar. However I do have weak moments where something like a carbon would end up in the shopping cart.
Its budget vs personal preference. Ive been using Arai forever except when Bell threw me a few lids free.

thanks for starting this! Lately I’ve been using a Snell SA2020–rated helmet (simply because it’s affordable and widely supported at local SCCA/autocross events). Anyone trying newer FIA or M homologated lids? Curious how the fit/comfort compares, especially for longer sessions or hotter tracks.

Interesting thread—thanks for bringing it up! I’ve recently upgraded to a Bell RS7-S SNELL SA2020 helmet. The ventilation is a game-changer during hot track days, and the fit is snug without being uncomfortable. I’m thinking of going FIA 8860 next—anyone here made that jump? What differences did you notice in visibility or weight?
toward the end of this year the 2025s are coming out. i'll likely be giving a carbon lid away from OG racing as a podcast promotion.
