Default Having a weird power loss issue.

I have a 96 civic with the d16y8 on an automatic transmission. I can only drive the car for about 5 to ten minutes before there is no power to the car it eventually kills its self. It starts fine but after a little bit of time it starts to have a lack of power to where I have to have the pedal to the floor to just barely get it to move. Anyone have an idea on what's going on?

when vehicle shuts off, is it a smooth transition or does it shake and lug around until it shuts off?

sounds like a misfire.

check for spark/fuel.
when was the last timing belt service? possible that it may have jumped timing.
if strong spark and fuel is found at each cyl, check your timing

As Nine said, check spark/fuel and timing, and I'll add to that make sure your distributor is on tight and none of the plugs have rattled loose
