Default Superchargers or Turbochargers? About Their Advantages and Disadvantages

As we all know, superchargers and turbochargers are basic options that can boost horsepower in a vehicle. But here is a question, which is better?

By using a supercharger, the power comes immediately because they not rely on exhaust gas. Besides, supercharger can also be tuned instantly to provide linear boost beyond the rpm range. Moreover, a turbocharger requires engine oil lubrication, which is a demand on the engine. However, we didn’t say a supercharger is perfect. A supercharger will take more power from engine to generate power. This means that when you try to gains the power back, you will find the process is not efficient enough.

On the other hand, a turbocharger relies on a vehicle’s exhaust to drive a turbine to power a compressor, which will pull more air in an engine. From a perspective of efficiency, the turbocharger has an advantage. It makes a good use of exhaust gas and turns it into something useful. Meanwhile, a supercharger won’t do this and acts more like a naturally aspirated engine.

What’s is your take?
Some people believed superchargers are better option, but other people believed turbochargers are supreme. It is still a de bate in the professional field. However, car lovers will find no matter superchargers or turbochargers that suit their requirement.
