Default How do I know if my compressor clutch has burnt?

I was fixing my A/C, everything is fine the car has enough freon pressure and compressor working but the A/C switch from inside is not working. So I bypassed it and used positive terminal from battery and connected it to compressor clutch and my car suddenly died and the clutch was still connected, I did cut it instantly but the compressor had smoke going out of it and it smells like burnt rubber. When I let it cool down later the clutch was still working and the compressor wasn't siezed. Any thoughts?
