Wacky Electronic Problems after Battery/Alternator Issue
Hi Honda Techies,
I have a mystery electrical issue happening in my 2003 Accord EX 3.0L V6 after a battery and alternator issue...sorry for the half a novel here, just didn't want to leave anything out that was potentially important.
When driving last week, the battery light came on. Seemed like power was a little weak in the car...I took it to O'Reilleys to get tested - both the battery and alternator passed the test. Spoiler alert - They weren't okay, but apparently were working well enough in that moment to pass the test.
As the battery (and yet-to-be-discovered) the alternator were in their final few few days, the car was failing to start so I used a Schumacher jump starter a few times to start it. Everything started fine. Thought the issue might have been a slow drain from a light that sometimes stays on in the glove compartment if it's not closed properly.
I turned car off and checked voltage on the battery and BAM, the multimeter started sparking (welding?) on the battery posts. No I didn't reverse the polarities and it was set to 20V but may have been faulty. WTF?
At some point in my next attempt to start the car, my turn signal indicators started flashing rather quickly, which at that point my turn signals might not have been working, but I didn't notice then.
I took it to get another test at O'Reilleys and not only did the battery and alternator fail, the alternator puffed a big cloud of nasty smoke during the test. Ok so definitely have a bad alternator and battery.
I drove it home and parked it and changed the battery - turned it on and the head lights went out. I drove it a block away to my friends' house who helped me change the alternator.
The battery and alternator are working properly now but here's where my current issue starts or I become aware of it.
I have no headlights
no turn signals
no brake lights
no radio
my right rear power window clicks when activated from the drivers side but does not roll down.
Crap!
I do have:
-rear lights
-reverse lights
-brights
I haven't checked all the fuses yet, but I found that fuse 25 for the rear right power window is blown and when I put a new fuse in, it immediately blows.
I am a total novice with working on electrical systems but I've gathered that there is likely a short circuit happening somewhere. Is it possible that there is a short-circuit happening in multiple places? Should I start with the Electrical Wiring Diagrams and see what circuits might be affected?
I will take it to the mechanic if I can't figure it out, but I am wanting to try my hand at a DIY fix if possible and I don't know how much more moneys I can justify spending on this car, even though I love her and we've been through a lot together. Any hints or wisdom in the right direction are much appreciated
Thanks,
David
