Head Swap issue?
Hello All,
I recently acquired a 2000 Civic Si that had "valve train noise".
Upon investigation. the noise was due to the fact that the bolt holding on the cam gear was broken off in the cam, so someone tack welded the cam gear onto the cam. That weld broke, so the gear was moving on the end of the cam and that caused the noise.
This is on a P2J SOHC head.
I could not find a new cam and gear for this head, but I found a P08 head complete and bought it.
I had to move the black and yellow wire to the main distributor harness and the blue wire is not used. Other than that - everything fit fine.
Problem I am having is that the car wouldn't start at first. I checked spark, compression, timing and all was good. I thought I would pull injectors and check them and when I unplugged the fuel injectors I figured I would try to turn it over and see if it behaved the same, To my surprise it fired right up and ran off the fuel in the cylinders. More messing around caused me to discover if I unplug the MAP sensor from just in front of the throttle body it would fire up and run. Sometimes, it idled at 400 RPM and would die with the slightest touch of the throttle. Sometimes you could rev it up and it would idle fine at 1000 RPM and respond to the throttle - but always would stall when you mashed it. Would almost never restart without unplugging the MAP sensor. Tried unpluggin temp sensor, throttle position sensor, VTECH solenoid. NOne of them consistently made a difference, but some seemed to do something, just not reliably.
It's weird because this car ran fine before I swapped the head - it just had noise from the broken cam gear.
So my question is - should I have changed the computer when I changed the head? Because it sure seems like a fuel/air mixture issue. But is it so inconsistent. Or could this be a problem with the main fuel relay?
If I should have changed the computer - what computer should I look for? Anyone have a part number?

And to make it easy for everyone, the P08 head is typically the D16Z6 head.
Original head (P2J) on the car was typically the D16Y8 head.
