Default 1998 AWD Rear differential repair

I have a1998 CR-V AWD that has a “loose” rear diff. Is there a way to repair this over play or is it a case where I just replace it?

What are the symptoms of the condition you are experiencing?
are there noises associated with it you can describe?

The drive shaft was already gone when I bought the vehicle. I had a mechanic check out the rear diff and he said it’s very loose and has a lot of play to both sides which is probably why the drive shaft was removed. I’m asking is that bearing issue or some other part I can replace or should I just replace the entire thing?

Replace it as a unit.
