95 Ody - How to check ignition timing
Hello. I did a search and did not find anything exactly like this.
I recently replaced the distributor due to a TDC sensor error that was preventing the van from starting. I went to check the timing with the light according to the repair manual I have and it does not look the same. The repair manual shows a V notch for TDC and a little bit away from that a second V notch that is used for the ignition timing check. The harmonic balancer on the van look different. It has 3 V notches right next each other with little space between them. I also could not locate the mark on the timing cover that I should be checking against. So I am a little lost on how to actually check the timing on this. The 95 doesn't come with a tach, so I installed one using the service tech jumper near the passenger strut tower to check the RPMs to at least check the idle on it. It idles around 1500 on startup and then drops to between 650 and 700 for a running idle.
I am running into a separate issue with bogging at 40 MPH that will gradually slow the van down until you have to pull over. I can hear a ringing sound in the exhaust so I think something either broke in the cat or muffler and is moving around in there, possibly clogging the exhaust flow. Before I go any further with diagnosing this other issue, I want to make sure the timing is correct so I am not running too rich or lean and causing possible further damage or new damage to replaced parts.
