Icon3 Low Gas Light Always On

Hello everyone,

I am new to the forums and fairly new to working on my car; however, I am pretty experienced working with electronics.
[I will be telling you what seem like unrelated details, for the purpose of exhausting all possibilities.]

I have a V6 1999 Honda Accord. A couple weeks ago, I was getting a P0401 (Exhaust Gas Recirculation Insufficient Flow) code, so I took it to the mechanic and he replaced my EGR valve.
However, the idiot did not plug in the electrical sensor so I was getting a P1491 (EGR Valve Lift Insufficient Detected) error now. I plugged in the electrical sensor and the error went away, but the P0401 code came back after driving it about 80 miles.
The next day, I cleaned both of the EGR passages. (The one on the manifold and the one on the rest of the block). I have not had any codes since then. However, about three days later (after work) I started my car, but it cranked quite a bit longer than usual. Since then, it has started and cranked normally.

Yesterday, I replaced some instrument cluster lights with LEDs because a lot of them had not worked since I bought the car (I didn't know it could look so beautiful).
One of the lights I replaced was the low gas light (1 of the 4 larger bulbs in the cluster). At first it didn't stay on, or even turn on when I started my car, but now it is always on.
Also, the D4 light went out and I did not replace any shift lights.
My thoughts:
  • I could have shorted something because I got kind of lazy. I did not wear anti-static gloves or a bracelet when I worked with the instrument cluster board. Also, I disconnected the cluster board from the 3 plugs whenever I removed and inserted bulbs; however, I would not disconnect the car battery whenever I would connect or disconnect the board.Doubt: If I had shorted something, likely, the board itself would not have worked and/or other lights besides D4 would not have worked. Also, the D4 bulb could have gone out because of increased draw from the LED (idk though, I am not an electrician).
  • It could be the fuel pump. The constant fuel low fuel light in combination with the long crank several days ago makes me think that the fuel pump may be giving out. Also, I have noticed that my car's reaction time when accelerating from a stop is kind of slower than I remember it; I expect more from a 200HP V6 (although, the slower acceleration may just be my imagination). It is a 22 year old had this care for about 5 years and if the EGR passage was as clogged as it was, it makes me think that the previous owners did not change out parts that frequently. Doubt: If it were the fuel pump, then long cranks would be a frequent issue, but it is not.
  • It may be the type of gas that I bought. I filled the tank with Sinclair Oil gas and I usually use Conserv Fuel gas. Doubt: Seems like that should not matter much.

P.S - I will be checking the resistance and cleaning the fuel injectors later. Maybe also resetting the ECM to see if that gets rid of the light.

Thank you guys for the help. I do not have money to take it to a mechanic.

I had the EXACT same issue and this is how I fixed it (gas light and other lights in dash). it's the LEDs causing an imbalance. To test this, just put all the sockets back to regular. You might find that there are actually other lights that are not working, but it should go back to "normal". To get mine to work, I had to replace every single light with LED's and make sure all burned out ones are removed as well and then replaced. Then it should work. Also, go around the whole car and check all the lights, brake lights, turn signals, etc. If any of those are out, I have seen the issue as well. And, in my case, once I had the dash working again (either with all non-LED lights or all LED lights and no burned out bulbs) only then did it work. In my odd case as well, I could only replace the front headlights with LEDs, replacing the back caused weird lighting again, so I flipped those back as well.

In my Civic I had a similar issue (it's the same year), and in that case I actually had to try two different sets of LEDs to get it to work, the original ones I bought were very very bright, and the same issue popped up (the gas light was always on). I switched to less bright LEDs, replaced all the burnt out ones, and then it started working perfectly again.

Good luck, but my bet is the LEDs are the culprit. You just can't run mixed LED and non-LED

Thanks, I'll give that a try. I have to order LEDs that fit and are the appropriate color though.

Like I said, to verfy just put all the lights back and I bet it works. Then you can get your lights.

Superbright sells a bunch and in all colors.
