'99 CRV Gear 4 not engaging/selecting
Please I need help on the above title issue. My CRV sometimes get stuck on Gear 3(btw 60-80km/h, 3000rpm). At this point, no matter how I rev the car, the gear won't change and at other times the gear selects smoothly moving past gear 3. Please what do I need to check or look out for? Thanks
These automatic transmissions have an interesting setup for shifting gears. There is a set of A and B solenoids that operates a set of corresponding shift valves inside the valve body as well as a seperate set of clutch pressure control soleniods that control shift timing and quality. This is all monitored by oil pressure switches and varies with transmission temperature as read by a temp sensor .It's entirely possible that either some debris is caught in the solenoid valves or inside the valve body itself.. .I don't have a manual for this generation transmission only the second generation 4 speed automatic so the Diagnostics will be a little bit different. However I know that if there's a lot of information on YouTube about these Transmissions. Basically what you can do is remove the pressure solenoids off of the transmission and there is little strainer screens in each one that you can clean out if there's any debris in them. If you spot a lot of shiny aluminum and metal in those screens than their transmission is got some excessive wear. If it's just some clutch material that's normal. It would also be normal to find nothing in no screens and still have a malfunctioning transmission. I've run across this problem before and take any solenoids off a transmission and not found anything clean them out and found the transmission shifted perfectly fine when it was warmed but but shifted horribly when it was cold to the point it wasn't even drivable. I didn't really dig into it much because it wasn't my car and the person who owned the car just ended up replacing it with another one in I'd never knew what happened. I did order a ship pressure solenoid pack for $24 on Alibaba I think but never got to use it. I do recall the following the diagnostic tree and going through a few steps and basically it was down to did it fix the transmission yes or if no replace the transmission. This transmission had a lot of metal in it so it was probably f'd anyway.
You should probably change the transmission fluid if you haven't done so already. There's lots of videos on YouTube on how to do that on that generation it's pretty simple as just a drain and fill. If it's got a lot of kilometres or miles on it and has been done for a long time then do a drain and fill three times to clean that transmission out.
