Immobilization system
I have a 2010 Accord I purchased in 2013. I have changed the battery twice with no problems. I changed the battery this September and a problem has happened. Right after installation of the battery, I attempted to start the car. It ran for maybe one second and shut off. The key was in the on position, so I tried again. Two things happened. The check engine light came on and the image of the key began to flash. I took the key out of the ignition, waited for the flashing of the image of the key to stop, inserted the key again and attempted to start. It did, but the check engine light stayed on. I contacted a friend in another state who is a service tech for a Honda dealer. He told me its the immobilization system. He worked with me trying to get the problem to stop but to no avail. For example, he told me to disconnect the negative cable, leave it off for 10 minutes. Reconnect and wait for 10 more minutes then start the car. It worked! Unfortunately the next time I attempted to start the car, the problem returned. If I stop and shut the car off, maybe for 5 minutes, the car will immediately start but the check engine light does stay on. He's had me try other possibilities to resolve the problem but obviously no luck. I even went to 2 Honda dealers and no help. I'm opening to any/all suggestions.
Thanks for the response. Don't have a clue about a CEL code. Need 1000 H/P out of a BBC? That I can do. I'll have to check for a vacuum leak but I'm pretty sure that didn't occur. When I left the last Honda dealer, the CEL wasn't on. A couple hours later, I started (attempted to) the car and the same old thing happened. Attempted to start, ran for a second and shut off. Tried again, no luck but the key indicator came on and the CEL was on. Pulled the key, waited for the flashing key to stop, put it back in and turned it over and it started right up. CEL stayed on. My friend told me the flashing key is directly associated with the immobilization system. The car has 237K on it and it runs so well. I always had the maintenance performed. Plugs, filters, etc. I would take care of. The dealership would do everything else.
As stated, I had it to 2 dealers. They explained to me when the engine starts and shuts off immediately, the fuel injection system is killed due to the immobilization system being activated. By waiting for the key to stop flashing on the dash means the immobilization system is now shut down and the car will start which it does. Unfortunately, they couldn't find the cause. I understand how the chip in the key FOB could be causing this. I asked them to check it but I don't know if they did or not. Anyway to check the chip to see if it corresponds with the program?
