1995 Accord EX 2.2 VTEC, Solved a Flashing D4 problem.
1995 Accord EX 2.2 Vtec Automatic
Driving home from work, ENGINE LIGHT, turned on.
RPM drops below 1000 RPM, Transmission won’t shift to third gear, D4 starts flashing soon after. Sounds like there isn’t enough air in the intake, I had to accelerate more to reach 40 mph, rpm will reach 3000 at that point.
Came to a full stop at my house, Rpm dropped bellow 100, engine dies, softly.
I turn the car off then on again, I drive, everything works fine, shifts smoothly. But, a minute later the car fails again. Same issue, no shift, low rpm, flashing D4 and dies when stopped/parked.
I leave it alone for now.
I take it to a mechanic the next day for a diagnostic.
He tells me the codes showed a Code 14, Idle Air Control problem. But he also states that it could also be my ECM failing. Because, the car will run fine for a minute, the start to fail. And he explained that indicates a electronic issue.
Mainly from the ECM.
So he advised me to first, replace the Idle Air Control valve to see if the code pops up again.
I then proceeded to pull one off a donor car of the same model, engine size and year. It did not change the issue. So it must be the ECM.
I go back to the junk yard and pull one of the same car. Which was a 1994 Accord LX Automatic.
The ECM ID number did not match exactly, The ECM from my car was 37820-P0A-A01.
The ‘94 Lx was 37820-P0J-L50.
I took a chance to see it worked.
Swapped the old one out with the donor.
The car ran perfectly, switches through all the gears, VTEC can be engaged, normal idle.
I hope this info helps anyone with the same or similar issue. Correct me if I get any technical info wrong or if you had a better solution.
