My Cheap '87 CRX Si Destined for Cross-Country Trip
Well, it's almost Christmas. I need to make a 1,000 mile trip from Atlanta to Dallas pretty soon, so I figured, "why not buy something cheap, fix it, and drive it out there?" And so, a long-time Jeep fan is now in possession of an '87 CRX Si.
I've never owned a Honda, nor did I really plan to. But one of my all-time favorite Japanese cars is the 1st gen CRX. I didn't think I'd find one in my budget (I'm a broke college kid), but then I found this Si buried in the interwebs. I bought it for $1,100, and it's amazing in all of its battered glory. It comes from the second owner. 160k on the clock, runs and drives, and has all of the original papers from the factory. He even threw in a set of CRX rims that have been crudely spray painted. It looks rough, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't love it already.
I've got 12 days to get this thing ready to do 2,000 miles. It's got some idle issues (air leak for sure), a serious valve cover leak, the shifts take a lot of effort, it takes a mile to brake to a stop, and the suspension needs some work. Plus, it doesn't have cup holders. But aside from looking like a charcoal grill, it's a solid little car. No dents on the body (it was originally red), the interior is in great shape, and it's currently drivable. I have faith.
I'm probably going to be leaning on this forum for some help along the way. It needs some love, but I think it'll make the trip. I've got under two weeks, so let's see what happens.
