2011-CRV-Engine oil burning
My CRV is 147000 on mileage and I noticed that it is eating oil. I changed oil filter and oil. After driving for 2000 Km, my engine oil got burn. I can see gray smoke and average of the vehicle is going down. what could be the issue and how to resolve it?
How much are you consuming .... in quarts/1000mile average? In other words how many miles per add?
Have you inspected for leaks?
Are the spark plugs heavy with signs of oil consumption? Also has the PCV valve been replaced? How many miles between oil and filter changes?
Heavy oil consumption can be worn piston rings. Hondas are usually good for valve seal and guide wear, but excessive wear in guides or seals could also contribute.
A compression test and cylinder leak down can verify worn rings.

ThanksDavey7847 for your reply. I had oil and filter change in October and after that I drive it for 2000 Km and oil get consumed to 15%. My mechanic lifted the car and inspected for the leaks visually. There is no leaks. My car average rise to 12 liter per 100 Km from 10 Lt.
How many kilometres are you driving before you have to add a litre of motor oil.
Yes, exactly , I had filled full gallon synthetic 0W20 oil in October and it should last for at least 6000 to 8000 km. Surprisingly 85% consumed within 2000km driving and I saw 15% on maintenance minder.
Okay so I'm unclear on what engine you have in this vehicle. It sounds like you're in Europe so you might have a 2L gasoline or you could have a 2.2 diesel engine or you could have a 2.4 l gasoline. You should refer to the attachment that I sent you in this to make sure you're putting enough engine oil in because the 2.4 gas the 2.2 Diesel take more oil ( more than 3.8 liters) than you're actually putting into the crankcase. Also the maintenance minder system is showing 15% oil life remaining but that has nothing to do with the amount of oil in the crankcase ...the system does not measure the level s it is just a measurement of life expectancy. And takes into consideration basically how you're driving your vehicle... for example long trips vs. Short trips heated Engine versus a cold engine that never got fully warmed AND time, including, time the car sits parked at home, for example, unused and not running. I have seen Hondas sit for months in a showroom and call for an oil change at 1500 km or less. Thes parameters are used to then set up an estimation of when you should change your oil. Now you said that your fuel consumption has increased so I'm curious what your driving habits are. Are you travelling a lot inside of a city with many many short trips or are you travelling on the motorway a lot with many long trips or is it a combination of both? And if it is a combination which is more City driving or highway driving?

I'm wondering if something has changed in your driving habits that has caused the increase fuel consumption? The fuel consumption that you are reporting indicates that you're doing a lot of in town driving. By your current mileage it looks like you drive about 16,000 kilometres every year . Are you driving less now or more now?
Please tell me are you adding oil at any time before changing, and what is the crankcase level on the dipstick when its changed.

I am in Canada and I have 2.4 L engine in CRV. I drive mainly in the city and frequent short trips as I am also a Uber eats driver. When maintenance minder showed 15%, I checked oil level on the stick and it was indeed at the bottom (minimum low) level on the stick. I took it to mechanics and he mixed 5W-20 oil with 0W-20 (recommended by honda for 2011) saying that 5W-20 is thicker and provide more lubrication. Then after I drive my car for 250 Km and oil level is adequate on the stick.

I purchased this car in June 2020 with 138000 Km on odometer. It has cross limit for extended warranty as given in your link. I am using this car from last six months only. I drive 8000 Km in six months. I have never added oil before changing it anytime in between.
okay so I'm trying to figure this out but you're kind of giving me some confusing information here. So you said that you drove 8000 km and then you checked it and it was way down on the dipstick is that correct? Or is it the case that after 2000 km it was way down on the dipstick? If you're using the vehicle for Uber Eats and you're doing lots of stop and go driving it makes sense that the engine oil life is going to deteriorate a lot faster. However I wonder if the maintenance minder was reset the previous time that the maintenance was done? If it wasn't reset and the service was done it would still keep going and then tell you to change the oil cuz it wouldn't know that you did change the oil. If you're having an oil consumption problem that bulletin that I sent you will solve that issue. But if your maintenance minder is just telling you to change your oil more frequently that has everything to do with all the short driving that you're doing lots of stop and go lots of engine restarts. Also I would like to point out that you shouldn't really be mixing the 0-20 and the 5-20, if you read the bulletin it actually tells you what you should be using; in this case the bulletin recommend 0-20. You should just use one oil as mixing then is 100% useless. I would recommend checking the oil every time you fill the tank just to get into the habit of doing it and just running the oil change intervals at 5000 km through the winter, that is assuming that there's no issue with oil consumption
Thanks for reply.
the bulletin that you shared is having all the details for high oil consumptions.
To clarify it further, I am explaining you again. I did oil change and maintenance reminder was reset to 100%. Then, I drew my car for around 2000 Km and I got remainder. I brought my car to mechanic and he did check the dipstick and oil was low on the stick hence to make up the oil volume he added 5W-20 saying that it is has high viscosity then 0-20. Now, I am using my car.
On the internet I see the product like " Nol eak engine oil "

There are many similar products in the market, does this product really help? is it advisable to add this product in to the engine?
Kindly give your expert opinion.

The stop and start in city driving with lots of engine starts and stops is going to be hard on components. The shortened life expectancy of the maintenance minder is expected especially in the now colder weather. You are now into the extreme conditions maintenance intervals.

Mixing viscositys is a waste of time as per the maintenance minder; it will have zero affect on the interval. Additionally, it will have no measurable affect on a leak or consumption. I know you said the mechanic said it was low when he checked it, but that is a subjective statement ; if he said its off the dipstick( very low/almost empty) or down 1 litre, that's a proper description. A little low or down a liter after 2k km of stop start city driving isn't that unusual.
if you suspect a leak, the procedure is a visual inspection; it should be obvious. If you have previous oil residue, the mechanic can add dye to the oil and view the underside of the engine after a period of time has elapsed, using a blacklight. If the oil level is dropping at an unusual rate, the spark plugs should examined for oil fouling. If that is found, its a piston ring failure as per the bulletin. Adding stop leak to your engine won't help if its leaking .
