Default 2006 2.4L - Need new clutch or hydraulics?

Hi everyone. So today on the way home from work, I believe my clutch may have given out. Now for a few weeks before this, there were times where it was a bit difficult to get into gear. Today, while at a stoplight, I pushed in my clutch and realized it had A LOT of free play and would go straight to the floor very easily. My car also would not go into gear. I eventually got it into clear, but with the clutch depressed it wanted to creep forward and would try to stall out since I had the brake pressed. I managed to get it home. Got stuck on my driveway, and it wouldn’t go into any gear; I had to turn the car off, put it in first, and drive it up the driveway. Clutch engaged right off the floor and the pedal was very soft.

I checked the master cylinder, there is still fluid, not sure what else to check there. Checked the slave, and it pushes in as the clutch pedal is pushed.

I’m thinking its time for a new clutch. If thats the case, how hard is it to DIY? Can it be done without dropping the subframe? The car is a 2006 2.4L. The only other clutch I’ve done is on a 2001 Miata, so I have never dealt with a FWD clutch before; it will also be my second time doing this.

Anything else I can test in my driveway to pinpoint what the issue may be?

Always feels great to get her back home and avoid time and money of a tow .Sudden failure sounds like a issue with slave or hydro system. You should have noticed lack of engagement grinding slipping before it clutch itself just failed. You could have a failure without fluid loss. Clutch job is a bit more than rear drive mazda. Took me about 8 hours to do clutch flywheel and main seal. ABout $280 in parts with exedy kit with flywheel off ebay.and seal from honda dealer. Here is a great writeup: Slave is easy to access just below intake on side of tranny only 2 10mm bolts to mount and bleeder screw right there. Good Luck!!

Yes it does...as nerve wracking as it was, I'm glad I got her home! Thank you for the writeup on clutch replacement; if it comes down to it then that will be a great reference! I just ordered a beck arnley clutch slave off of Amazon. Hopefully with that replaced everything should be all good again. I will let you know how it goes! Hopefully that is what is causing it, because like you mentioned, it was definitely a pretty sudden failure...now that I think about it, it was kind of like when the slave in my Miata went.
