Default brief miss or stumble on 99 civic

Engine is a D16....
manual transmission, bone stock

when driving, if you are accelerating mildly from cruising it will have the quickest of blips...a stumble...then it resumes normally...it will wind out just fine and you can still drive it all you want....a brief trip around the block, with a few stop signs etc, it will happen 6 or 7 times....

Any ideas? revving the engine at a standstill doesnt produce it...it seems to happen under a slight load while accelerating.

Thanks in advance!

D16Y7, D16Y8, or D16Y5?

CEL codes?

Last full ignition system tune up?

no codes.
no idea on tuneup save to say the previous owners were friends
of the family and took great care of it...plug wires look new.

Also it got worse ....took longer than normal to start a few times and after a short drive it ran rough and stalled then took a good bit of cranking to fire.

also my sons says a rhythmic popping from exhaust at times

When a 6th generation Civic has a misfire issue, the first place to start is a full ignition system tune up (NGK plug, wires, cap, rotor, distributor housing inspection, ignition timing). Then go from there.

How did you check for CEL codes? Does the CEL work?

Thought I would update this thread since we did resolve it and I hate when Im reading thru and stuff gets left hanging.....I am a lifelong gearhead...cars, motorcycles, industrial machinery (for money hehe)

its one of those things where I thought about it here and there for a week, and then the likely culprit hit me. What did it was that my son described and episode where it got a lot worse briefly, as in engine died, and was hard to start, and ran rough then cleared up. 3 of my sons own or have owned 90s Hondas and Ive been the chief mechanic.......looking back on other experiences we had....
IGNITOR.

$15 on Ebay. BAM. Stumble gone, runs smoother than it ever has, idles lower...a world of difference.

Thing to remember here is that electronics often fail intermittently....especially those damn ignitors. So when he told me about it getting worse then better it clicked.Honestly if I ever build a Honda for myself, Im going to have a distributor in the trunk ready to go at all times.
