Default CHSAS, VSA, TPMS, Power Steering lights came on after Clock Spring replacement

Hello All,

I have a 2014 Honda Civic LX. I had my clock spring replaced due to the Air bag light staying constantly on. Mechanic went through the steps of disassembling the steering wheel after disconnecting the negative battery terminal from the battery. Mechanic installed the Clock Spring and removed the tab that prevents the clock spring from free spinning after it was installed. I do not believe he verified if the clock spring was center (checked the amount of spins the entire spring had than divided my 2). he proceeded to fully assemble the rest of the steering wheel and cleared the stored Airbag light code. When I was taking the vehicle from the garage and made my turn and than accelerated to about 2500 RPMS, the Vehicle Stability Assist Engaged causing the car to vibrate and pull to the right.. I turned the vehicle around and went back tot he mechanic and he tested it. We drove the vehicle together and when he made a U-turn the Power Steering , Check hill start assist system, check TPMS system, and Check VSA errors engaged.

These lights have never cut on before and i've never had issues with this. The vehicle has less than 45,000 miles and I've had it for over since 25,000. The vehicle is rarely driven. My questions are:

Is it possible that if the clock spring ribbon was detached and broken and if the wires inside the ribbon touched, could it cause the other sensors in the vehicle to malfunction?

Clock spring or steering angle sensor were probably damaged during installation. They are both right next to each other. My guess is steering angle sensor is not happy. A good code reader will read the codes from all the systems and tell you want is not working.

Thanks for the reply, would you think replacing just the clock spring will correct the issue or is there more things that need to be addressed?

Could be the steering angle sensor that is separate from the clock spring. They live next to each other but are two different parts.

Yeah I actually did see that part when he removed it. I'm taking it to a shop to see if that sensor can be reset. If it continues than I'll probably need a new one. The parts only 65$

Not saying the Nissan does it the same as the Honda but it does show troubleshooting steps that would be roughly the same. Probably a similar clock spring to steering angle interface that maybe did not get put back together correctly.

Part 1
Part 2

Hey Ryan,

Found out what it was. I have a friend with an Autel Maxipro Scanner and we looked at the data for the steering angle sensor. Turns out the steering wheel is registering that its turned clockwise 180 degrees even though the wheel is straight. I've narrowed it down to the mechanic who installed the part accidentally spun the steering angle sensors inner ring clockwise 180 degrees during the installation. Going back soon to have him spin it back. Those little notches on the inside are what tell the computer what direction the steering wheel is in. Picture is below.

Thanks for helping me narrow down what could have possibly went wrong.

Awesome. I believe you can use the Autel to relearn the zero position as well. There is also a jumper wire and brake pedal/ignition key combo that will also relearn the zero positions. I think it is called a VSA neutral position memorization.

Honda recommends taping both the cable reel and the steering angle sensor together during removal and installing. This keeps the parts properly positioned and keeps the sensor from accidentally moving. This link show some of the Honda info. which applies to other Honda models as well.

If the steering angle sensor got rotated 180 degrees positive (to the right), it just needs to be manually rotated back to the left (re-positioned); tabs in a 12 and 6 position.
