Default 2000 CRV driver's door lock will not unlock

This has been going on for a few days now. Sometimes it works just fine but when it doesn't, I can't unlock the door electrically, manually (by pulling up on the lock ****) or even with the key. The power door lock actuator seems to be working fine, no grinding noise and when the door lock IS working, it pops up quickly. When it's not working, it only pops up about half way and will not go further. I even grabbed it with a pair of pliers to try to pull it up and it wouldn't budge.
After doing a bit of research online, I found that a small spring inside the lock assembly will sometimes break and the part that stays attached, will fall down and block the mechanism from unlocking. I purchased a new lock assembly but with my long hours at work, I haven't had the time or energy to replace it. Previously, I could just fiddle with it (locking and unlocking repeatedly) and eventually, I'd hear a small thump and the door would unlock. Now even that's not working and I can't get my driver door open to replace the lock assembly.
Any suggestions on how to get the door open?
