Replaced the rack, inner, and outer tie rods (1999 Honda Civic EX 1.6L 2 door coupe D16y8 5 speed) The inners included with the rack I got were longer than the OEM ones and could not be used. . I reused my old (but good) inners and now I have a question....
I wanna make sure my turn radius is correct. As in, what angle is proper when turning the wheel full lock left and/or right. I get almost exactly 1.5 turn on the wheel but I'm more concerned about how much the tires should turn out. I wanna make sure I'm getting the correct travel of my tires. I can use the longer inners but I'd have to cut 1/2" off the ends to fit properly. In doing so, I could gain more travel of the tie rods since they'd be a tad longer. I just wanna make sure as it sits now, I'm getting the correct travel. For example, if not, I might not be able to make a successful u turn if the wheels don't turn far enough. Make sense?
So if anyone has a 1996-2000 Civic, that should be the same measurements.
So is anyone out there willing to take a measurement of the angle in which the tires stop at at full lock left or right? I'm thinking : with steering wheel straight, mark a straight line parallel to the tire. Then, turn steering wheel full lock left (for example) and measure the angle.
@muellersfan maybe you could chime on here? You've helped me more times than I can count.
With the longer inners installed, are you saying that a shop was unable to align the front wheels? I am asking because all of your queries would be addressed when a shop does the front wheel alignment, which is required after replacing the rack or tie rods.
With respect to the correct wheel turning angles, this diagram from the service manual should help.

Sorry for late reply @muellersfan . So let me try to clarify.
With the longer than OEM inner tie rods installed, after installing the outer tie rods and threading them ALL THE WAY IN, the wheels are unable to be straight. As in, the tie rod assembly is now TOO LONG. The tires would point slight inwards as a result. Does that make sense? The inners are about 3/4" longer than OEM. If you can imagine, with longer inner tie rods, putting OEM outers on would in turn make the length of these two much longer, and unable to center the wheels or even perform an alignment.
I hope this clears up things.
I've since put the OEM inners on, done an alignment using the "string method" (good enough to drive to alignment shop in town) and it seems fine. I'll have to reference the diagram you posted to make sure I have correct turn radius however
