What power steering fluid to use?
Going to be replacing my PS rack here soon on a 92 civic, wondering if there’s a specific type of power steering fluid it calls for. When I first got the car it was low, so without thinking I just put some PS fluid I had in there and here come a few days later it has a huge leak. Pretty sure it is the seal on the rack itself on the passenger side and to my knowledge you have to either take it out and rebuild it or replace it. Took the belt off and have been driving with no power steering for months. Don’t mind it at all but since I already got a PS rack laying around I figure I’ll replace it. What do I use for fluid? Honda genuine? Or an ATF?
Honda uses a specific formula for PS pumps. There are alternatives that you should be able to get the fluid from any auto parts shop...or you can get the fluid from Honda. I know advanced auto parts sells it:

I’ve also noticed some autozones are stocking original Honda fluid along with some other oem fluids. Use that and only that. If they don’t stock it, go to the dealer. It’s not the cheapest stuff but you only need ~3 bottles for a full system and it might just outlast the car at this point.
I was wondering the same thing for my 1991 Accord.
As I'm at the dealer right now getting my seat belt replaced.
As the closest dealer to me is an hour and a half drive.
So I found this thread and did some googling.
Walmart has genuine Honda fluid for about $21.00 for a qurart.
Auto zone has their house brand labeled for Honda Only for about 6 bucks for 12oz.
I just asked the parts guy at the dealer. It's just under 6 bucks for 12oz!
The dealer is Kingman Honda on Stockton, in Kingman AZ.
So, am I the only one that is surprised at the dealers price being within pennies of the aftermarket stuff at auto zone?!?
Looks like I'll be leaving the dealership with some power steering fluid!
Nover thought a steelership would be the same as AutoZone. And if there is a diferance, you know the Honda stuff is likly to be better stuff.
