Let's try this again with the honda-tech pic so my post doesn't get deleted. Hey everyone, after a pretty extensive build and a great handful of years with my wagon, I’m considering selling it. I just don’t spend enough time driving or working on it anymore and it pains me to see it mostly collecting dust. Also, I’m moving to a house that has no good place to store or work on it, and the sale will help fund a garage so that I can continue with another Honda in the future.
I really have no idea how much it is worth. I haven’t followed this forum in a few years, plus with all the work and upgrades, etc., it’s hard for me to judge. I would really appreciate any feedback you guys can give to help me properly value it. I’ll try to describe all the things that have been done, and the current state of things as best as possible. Since a price is required, let’s call it $5000. I'll entertain most any offer.
The short story of this car is that it began as a complete teardown and rebuild of a barely-running car from Craigslist down in Dallas, with the intention of becoming an AutoX car. I worked a couple of . years building it up, and a new job in the Seattle area forced me to finish up the last few things on the car and bring it with me as my daily driver to Seattle. After driving on the absolute trash roads in the PNW, I immediately decided the coilovers and low profiles had to go, so I put it back on stock coilovers and threw some all-terrains on it. I daily drove it for about 2 years, zero major issues. Mostly sitting since then, occasionally driven just to keep things fresh. Has been on long road trips, hiking/camping trips on all sorts of backroads, and even rallycrossed once last year (driven to and from the rallycross in one piece!). Since the original build it has probably 20-30k miles on it.
I’ll try to cover all details of the original build-up here (some things not covered in the build thread above):
1990 RT4WD Civic Wagon
Brown (Espresso?)
Motor/Drivetrain Stuff:
· Auto-to-manual swap
· DOHC ZC Swap (purchased from import shop in Dallas TX when I still lived there – exact mileage unknown)
· Vibrant resonator/exhaust, all piped with appropriate/matching diameters (I think 2.5 or 3” – having trouble recalling) – NOTE: This was one of the last-minute things done to the car, and the exhaust shop did not have appropriate flanges to mate the back section with the headers, so it is welded on. Easy fix for any exhaust shop or someone with some welding knowledge.
· Alternator, distributor, other misc. engine peripherals all replaced during motor buildup
· Rebuilt all u-joints (e.g. pressed out original and replaced all needle bearings, etc. – what a huge PITA)
· Transmission and other drivetrain parts salvaged from various other cars
· All CV joints and wheel bearings replaced at time of build. Front 2 CV joints replaced in the past 6 months (had some weirdness going on post-rallycross…all good now!)
Suspension/steering stuff:
· Originally PIC coilovers – currently stock RT coilovers (PIC’s still available)
· Originally adjustable front UCA’s – currently stock UCA’s (adjustables still available)
· Innovative Traction Bar
· Energy suspension full poly bushing kit all around
· OEM ball joints and anything not included in the Energy Suspension kit
· Mugen RCA bushings
· Function7 LCAs
· Skunk2 rear camber adjustment
· BWR rear toe adjustment
· Si steering rack
· Power steering removed
Brake Stuff:
· Completely rebuilt rear brakes
· Front brakes were originally an S2000 caliper/rotor conversion that was a DIY job purchased from someone on this site (I don’t remember who ☹). Master cylinder and all that fun stuff was upgraded to handle the extra braking power. Swapping from the low profile tires/wheels and putting it back on stock suspension forced me to get rid of this and put it back on stock front brakes. Still have the S2000 conversion kit.
· Stainless lines all around (some have some signs of rubbing/wear)
Cosmetic/Body Stuff:
· No significant rust. Just a tiny little rust at the typical rear wheel well spot, which has been treated with rust stopper stuff.
· No major dents, tried to find the cleanest hood and front fenders I could find…just need paint.
· Paint is pretty rough.
· Small crack in front windshield, all other glass in good condition.
· Interior plastics all in quite good condition. No cracking I can think of.
· Interior carpet is in decent condition, some small tears only in the rear.
· Decent floormats
· Front seats are a bit rough, thus the seat covers.
· Rear seats have no tears, just very dirty.
· Rear carpets could use a nice shampoo as well.
· Steering wheel doesn’t wobble but is a bit worn away.
· Trim/ding guards generally in good condition. Fresh new RT stickers all around.
· LED lights all around, except for headlights. Can’t remember what I did with headlights…
Other stuff:
· AC removed as part of long-term plan to supercharge
· HX wheels (original build low profiles not available ☹)
· OEM Roof rack
· No sounds system, but rear speaker pods available
· Odyssey racing battery relocated to rear spare wheel well with cutoff switch
· SUPER RAD “save a civic wagon” sticker
· All 4 mudflaps 😊
· SUPER CUSTOM goat fur shift boot – extra $10k
Okay so now here’s my best opinion on the general good/bad:
Good:
· Runs like a champ. Really fun to drive. Was SUPER responsive and fun before dumbing down the suspension and raising it back up. Still super fun to drive on the stock springs.
· There really isn’t a single part of this car that wasn’t touched and rebuilt, aside from maybe the frame itself and some electrical system stuff.
· I would have no hesitation to drive this thing cross-country. Current longest trip was to Helena and back.
Bad:
· The motor has had some valve clicky-type noise since I got it running, which as I understand is very typical of the ZC’s. Have tried adjusting the lashings and/or timing several times to no avail. It doesn’t seem to be affecting performance or reliability at all, but just kinda annoying. Maybe someone better at this than me can fix it.
· The starter sometimes gets “stuck” and needs a little whack to get going. Or just rock the car while in gear. Easy fix.
· Check engine light comes on most of the time, doesn’t seem to be any “real” problem – likely something I messed up with the wiring/electrical as part of the swap. I *think* it is triggered by a certain amount of acceleration. Again, doesn’t seem to be indicating any actual problem.
· Idle surge sometimes because I can’t for the life of me find a decent EACV ☹
· There’s a little bit of a knock in the front passenger suspension. I haven’t tried to diagnose yet but my guess is something up with the stock coilover I put back on there. Was not an issue prior to this swap.
IN ADDITION TO THE CAR, also potentially for sale with the car or separate (I will likely hold on to some of this stuff if I don't sell the car):
PIC coilovers
Jackson Racing Supercharger, with adapter plate
Viscous coupler
Skid plate
S2000 brake conversion kit
Brown speaker pods
PM me for more pics, links to a build thread, and a youtube vid of the rallyx.
Thanks for reading!!
