Hello. Looking for some guidance/help with the exhaust system on a 2019 Honda Passport (Elite AWD). It seems the exhaust is the same as found in the Acura MDX.
And since it appears no one (Borla, etc.) will produce an exhaust for this rig I’m looking into “creating” my own with some modifications: muffler delete.
I’m asking if anyone can confirm how I have designated the below picture is correct.
Re: 2019 Passport: which is muffler and resonator?
Your image doesn't show up as imgur doesn't allow external embedding.
These are notes I added to the diagrams of what I think should be the resonator. Most resonators are right after the converter. On some cars, a resonator can also be combined with a muffler.
Re: 2019 Passport: which is muffler and resonator?
Not sure about "reputable"; but, a "knowledgeable" shop person should be able to confirm which is which. In any business, it depends on the person you're dealing with more than the business. A business may have a mix of knowledgeable and not so knowledgeable. Although in general a reputable shop is less risk than an unknown shop.
Re: 2019 Passport: which is muffler and resonator?
As I continue my journey I'm going to try to have a shop build out essentially part 11 in the below diagram.
One question I have is the exhaust connector flange, are they "universal"? Or do I need to know specifics as to the spacing between holes for the bolt? See the circle in the picture.
Re: 2019 Passport: which is muffler and resonator?
If the connecting mating surfaces of the exhaust pieces are OEM, the Honda OEM gaskets generally will make the best seal. You can use aftermarket with OEM pieces; but, imho, they do not seal the same.
If you're using aftermarket exhaust pieces to connect at the mating surface, then an aftermarket universal gasket may actually work better.
Re: 2019 Passport: which is muffler and resonator?
Thanks tech8. I would be using an aftermarket flange (metal triangle) to mate with the OEM connector flange at the 3 way converter. If I'm building my own exhaust I'll need the connector flange along with the muffler and resonator to mate with the rear OEM exits. I'm trying to find out if the metal triangle flange is universal for 2.5" piping or is there something specific I should be looking for to mate with the Honda OEM components. Meaning: are there differences in the distances between the bolt holes along with the shape of the actual triangle? Hopefully I'm making sense.
Re: 2019 Passport: which is muffler and resonator?
The slotted holes on the aftermarket flange should be approximate distances if it match with the existing exhaust diameter.
I do not know what the actual diameter of your exhaust; however, it may or may not be 2.5". This site sells flanges that suppose to fit 3" 2006+ Honda stock and aftermarket exhaust applications. You may want to contact them to get more info.
Re: 2019 Passport: which is muffler and resonator?
tech8 or anyone else... have an idea what other Honda vehicles have the same exhaust connector flange at the converter as the 2019 Passport? Ridgeline? Pilot? MDX?
I'm only interested in knowing what other vehicles may have the same cat converter with the same connector as in the 2019 Passport. Yeah, long-shot ask but going for it anyway.
The reason I'm asking is if I have an idea what may be the same, I can start combing auto salvage yards to get that flange to build a custom exhaust on my Passport; exhaust doesn't need to be the same, just the connector flange.
Re: 2019 Passport: which is muffler and resonator?
The 2019-2020 Honda Pilot Elite uses the same converter part number. The same converter shields are used by 2016-2019 Pilot, and 2017-2019 Ridgeline. The flange may possibly be the same.
Re: 2019 Passport: which is muffler and resonator?
I would be that anything that uses the same gasket at that flange will use the same flange. 18393-SDB-A00 That is the part number and it seems to be used in nearly everything that has a V6 clear back to 2003.
Re: 2019 Passport: which is muffler and resonator?
Updating this thread in the event someone else ventures down this road or has already and can provide some additional insight.
I was able to finally obtain the metal flanges from a 2018 MDX system. So along with them I also purchased the following Magnaflow muffler/resonators: #12256 and #10416. These are the mufflers that Magnaflow utilizes for their Ridgeline system for the 3.5 V6. Had a shop build me a system.
The drone around 2,000 rpms is too much for me. That’s the sweet-spot for the rpms when on the highway around 75mph. No good for me for any extended time. I was hoping to get sound from the upper rpm range when on the throttle (3-5,000 rpm). This system is pretty quiet in that range so I’m not sure if what I’m after is not possible with this engine or I need to change up one of the Magnaflows already installed.
Current set-up: engine --> 12256 --> 10416 --> split back to tips
As the 10416 is 4” round I was thinking moving up to a 6” round but wanted to ask for any feedback on how much that may help to tone down the drone. I’m willing to give this one more try before I stop spending money.
Re: 2019 Passport: which is muffler and resonator?
Spoke with Magnaflow today. They suggested to swap out the 4" round muffler for one of their 6" round mufflers as it will have more packing. As they said, the 4" round is the smallest they make [read: it will be the loudest].
Re: 2019 Passport: which is muffler and resonator?
I kept the OEM mufflers (the really small ones) by the tips for my set-up. And the mandrel bends? Do not follow the question but I'm a dummy so please clarify.
I did purchase the 6" round Magnaflow and it was way too quiet for me. Really not much different than stock. So more money later, installed a 5" round Magnaflow muffler. As good as I can get it.
Here are the configurations I went through:
Tested and didn't like =
Magnaflow 12256 (5x8 oval) + Magnaflow 10416 (4” round) -- too much drone at highway cruising speeds
Magnaflow 12256 (5x8 oval) + Magnaflow 12626 (6” round) -- not enough sound for me
Re: 2019 Passport: which is muffler and resonator?
I had read that removing them did little to nothing in terms of sound. Consequently I didn't want to spend more cash at the muffler shop so I decided to keep them as-is.
