Default Servicing transmission on 1991 Honda Accord LX

On a 1991 Honda Accord Lx can you service the transmission? Like just to change the fluid or put a new filter in?

I asked a mechanic about doing it and he said it's not really serviceable. To change fluid or the filter you have to pull the engine just to get to the transmission!

I find it hard to believe you have to pull the engine to just change the fluid!

The transmission fluid can be changed. There is no serviceable filter.

This video shows a guy draining and filling the transmission fluid.

A three-times drain and refill is commonly recommended to get the best fluid condition since plenty is left inside after draining. There are decent alternatives to OE fluid these days which eases the pain on the wallet a bit when you're dumping 8 qts of fluid (you'll want a total of 12 qts for the 3x drain/fill)

The internal filter is not "serviceable" in that the transmission must be removed and disassembled to clean or replace it. A magnefine in-line can be added in one of the cooler hoses (they run from trans case to lower radiator tank.) another option is the factory filter added to some of the newer models. Honda P/N 25430-PLR-003. adding one won't clean the internal filter but it may extend the life a little.

Thank you both for very spot on responses to my question.

I'm definitely going to follow the easy how to. Even with my messed up body it's an easy DIY.

On aftermarket fluid what is the really most spot on fluid to use. $$ do matter. Also I live in a rual area but have a Walmart, and AutoZone, and O'Reilly near me.
Honda dealer is a little over an hours drive. So if it's really OK, and just as good as OEM, I would like to use the after market stuff.

Again, thank you for the great responces,

You don't need to use Honda fluid for the transmission. The owner's manual and service manual specify Dexron II ATF. Since Dexron II is no longer available, get Dexron III ATF.

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONFLUID CHANGE CAPACITY: 2.4 (2.5 US qt, 2.1 Imp qt)

I have used Maxlife ATF Dextron III on the automatic of my Accord. It's been good. I've done the 3 replacement cycle as said above, about once a week for 3 weeks to get it done. Sold it Walmart and others at a great price.
I believe this is the one:
