I am starting to think peeling steering wheels in 8th gen Si is just common. I ordered one of those leather wheel wrap kits you just sew on over but I started thinking the area where I have peeling won't allow me to install it properly, how would I go about fixing this area so I can apply the wrap without issue?
I installed one of those leather wrapped steering wheel covers on an Accord before.
The kit comes with very thin double side tape (more of just an adhesive that is on the tape). Place tape on the back of the steering wheel cover in that area.
The install comes out better if you remove the steering wheel airbag and trim piece first. (Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait at least three minutes before starting any work.)
With the trim removed, you can stretch the leather a little more into those area that get covered and gets kind of held in with the trim after the trim is reinstalled.
But do you see where it is curling back? Near where your thumbs would go. I am unsure how I'd be able to get the wrap over that area due to the way it's curling back and the wrap wouldn't be a clean install.
Maybe id have to remove the silver trim piece and attempt to re-glue the curling part back down first? 🤔 but it appears warped and I don't think I'd be able to stretch it back fully.
The leather on the replacement kit usually is stretchable a little. Like I mentioned, put some of the double-side tape that comes with the kit on the back of the leather cover in that area. Then you stretch the leather in that area a little and place further in that area. When you reinstall the steering wheel trim piece back on and tighten the screws, the trim piece and the adhesive helps hold that leather in place better.
The aftermarket cover kits leather sometimes has more material in certain areas than the stock cover, which is a good thing, as it helps to tuck it in behind the trim piece.
