Factory roof cross bars or a Thule / Yakima system?
Hey Honda forum.
I just got the roof rails installed on my 2017 Honda Odyssey. I'm now in the market for a cross-bar system that will hold some type of Thule / Yakima box for sleeping bags, pillows, etc. when my family goes camping.
Right now, I'd like any wisdom folks have on the OEM factory roof cross bars versus buying a Thule / Yakima roof system. It seems to me that they have similar weight tolerances (~160 pounds) but the Honda roof cross bars are 1) screwed it directly to the roof rails and 2) about $150 cheaper than a full Thule / Yakima system. Granted, I know the downside to the Honda cross bars are their slightly curved shape while the Thule / Yakima is perfectly flat.
Has anyone used a luggage box system on the OEM roof cross bars on an Odyssey? Has anyone tried doing a box + kayak carrier? I'm just curious if the OEM Honda part is sufficient for my needs.
Thanks all!
