Hey everyone, me again 🙋🏼♀️
Well I found out the hard way yesterday that I have no brakes, none whatsoever. Approaching the stop sign I hit the brakes and nothing happened other than the pedal going straight to the floor & me having that mini heart attack that you think you'd have in that situation...Some quick thinking & as my passenger put it "some pretty sharp driving skills" as a dump truck passed in front of us, got us stopped. I pulled to the roadside and raised the hood and there was absolutely no brake fluid so I filled it up but nothing changed. With my door open, when I hit the brakes I could hear a hissing sound from the back tire on the driver side. I bent down to look and I could clearly see brake fluid spraying out every time I hit the brake pedal. I don't know what to do from here. Can you guys help me please? My husband was killed in a motorcycle crash 2yrs ago so it's all on me now. Meaning I have to somehow fix this myself no matter how much my 11 yr old wants to do it. Any guidance or really just anything LOL😏 would be greatly appreciate as this is my only way to work & back. Thank you for reading this
I presume the brake line has a hole in it if you are seeing a spray of fluid. I'mnot sure if I would say this is the hardest thing to do, but it does involved removing the hose, putting in a new one, and bleeding the brakes.
Take a look at this to get an idea of how to do this.
Also, post specific information about the car, and perhaps when you finally get under it to look, take some pictures and post them so we can confirm what it is.
It sounds like you have a problem with either a brake line or a brake caliper. If fluid is leaking out it could be do to the line or hose having a hole, a bad seal or sealing washer problem where the line/hose attaches to the caliper (known as a "banjo fitting"), a loose or faulty bleeder screw/valve or the internal seal for the piston in the brake caliper has failed and fluid is leaking out that way.
Look at these photos I have attached, we know brake fluid is leaking from one of your rear wheels brake components but we need to narrow down where.
My thoughts are: if you have another car you can drive, then you can fix this at your leisure and do a careful, thoughtful job. wait for parts to show up, etc...
If this is your ONLY driver, and you have no brakes, and don't know how to fix it right now, this is NOT the best time to try and learn.
I would say in that case take it to a shop and have it fixed.
