Find a crashed 2000 Civic SI and pull everything including the 5 speed conversion and everything should swap over plug and play, its 1.6L DOHC and has a bit more power. Or drop a K20A2 but that's gonna cost you a pretty penny.
I think a relatively frugal but decent swap would be to take an F23A engine (from a 1999 Honda Accord [roughly]) and swap it in. Then if that goes well, upgrade the head to an H22 head for even a little more power. Stock F23A is roughly 150 horses, and they are fairly inexpensive to find. I just bought one for about $500 not long ago. The junkyard near me sells them for about $200 if you can get it unhooked (they will then pull it all the way out and bring it to the front of the junkyard to put in your truck or car.
Just an idea.
Just an idea.
