95 Accord SRS light
Recently, on my '95 Honda Accord V6, smoke began to come up from the dash board area while sitting at a stop light.
My engine light and SRS light came on so, I backed the vehicle up and parked it on the side of the road to figure
out what was burning. I popped the hood and saw nothing. I was able to drive the vehicle home and park it.
I had it towed to my local Honda Dealership (same dealership where I purchased the vehicle in 1995),
where they discovered that the SRS Unit actually caught fire and destroyed the unit. They said the SRS Unite needed
replaced but couldn't guarantee the SRS light would not come back on. They were concerned about the SRS wiring
harness being damaged by the fire. Anyway, I had them replace the SRS Unit and the SRS light came back on after
they cleared it. They then told me that it needed a workable SRS wiring harness to fix it. To-date, I have yet to find another
harness for this particular vehicle. To replace the harness will require removing the entire dashboard which is about
a $700 in labor job. They could not answer why the SRS unit caught fire in the first place. I've never ever had
any electrical problems with the vehicle in the 25 years that I've owned it. I guess the SRS unit just got tired of
working. The unit looks a bit like a computer board....my board was cooked. I assume when the fire destroyed the
SRS unit, it somehow damaged the SRS harness in the process. I am reluctant to try messing with the SRS system
of the vehicle due to the potential of causing more damage and possibly triggering the air bags. Just sharing my experience.
The SRS light remains but the vehicle is still drive-able with no more fires thus far.

95 was an odd year as it was the introduction of the v6 to the accord line, as well as being the last of the OBDI for the USDM Accord. I had a similar problem with the SRS module for my 1995 wagon, The part number for it, was only specifically for a 1995 accord wagon, no other years, or even the sedan/coupe shared that module and specifically wouldnt work either if tried (I tried a 94 wagon, a 95 sedan and no love)
