How to reset timing if belt breaks. 95 Honda Civic DX
Hey guys, timing belt broke while I was driving. I ordered a new belt and was going to replace it, just hoping to get lucky that valves didn't bend beyond full overhaul repair. My question is how do I re-time the engine now that timing belt is already off?
You actually want to make sure the crank is 90 degrees off of TDC or BDC when turning the camshaft. What this does is put all the pistons half way up or down in the cylinders so that there is zero possibility of valve&piston contact. Once you then have the camshaft on it's mark for #1 TDC, then you can safely rotate the crank to TDC to put the belt on.
