I'm taking my 99 honda civic Lx to the shop tomorrow, but I wanna ask a question. I have a weird noise coming from the rear end of my car when I accelerate. I really can't describe it. It's like a scrapping/squealing sound. From inside the car it's coming from the passenger side. It sounds like it's coming from the exhaust pipe area. It's not constant it comes and goes. I looked up under the rear end and I didn't see or feel anything out of wack. Has anyone ever experienced this before. Like I said I'm taking it to the dealer tomorrow and I just wanted to see if anyone had this issue before. It drives fine no shakiness or unstable driving. It turns fine with no issues. When I am at Idle it's fine it's only when I am driving. With the luck I've had the last couple of months it's probably something really bad. I have a feeling its bushings or the sway bar or something it that area. I just can't pin point it.
Using a bright light, carefully inspect the muffler, muffler pipe, exhaust pipe B, and heat shield. You will likely find a cracked pipe or heat shield.

If that's the issue then its not to bad I guess. I just had the exhaust system replaced 3 years ago. I will do that first thing tomorrow morning.
I didn't go to the dealer today. I want to inspect before I go there. I went up under my car again and inspected exhaust pipes etc..I didn't see any cracks or breaks. The only thing that I seen was my tailpipe was against the circle opening on the rear bumper where it sticks out. I dont think that would make that scrapping sound I'm hearing, but I don't know for sure. I opened my backseat and drove around and its definitely coming from the passenger side. What can I put around the tailpipe temporarily without burning anything up. I wanna see if I can isolate it and see if that's what I'm hearing. I don't think it will make a difference but I wanna try anyway. I believe that sound is coming from my right rear tire possibly the drum breaks. Even after I inspected it today and didn't see anything loose or broken on it. I don't know what would cause that sound if something was broken on the tire.
When I bought the car it had a aftermarket exhaust system installed. From looking under there today the muffler/gasket pipe section on your picture looks to be to the right a little bit, but maybe it's the way it was put together. It never made any sounds until yesterday. I wanna video the rear end of my car while I drive around the block a couple of times. That's the only way that I can see whats going on under there while I drive, but I don't know what I can use to put my phone on the outside of my car while I drive.
It's my tailpipe. I went to go drive around and record while I was driving, and as soon as I turned my car on the sound was there. It wasn't loud like I was driving, but I jumped out my car to the back and it's the tailpipe. It was loud outside the car. I went underneath to see where it was coming from and I couldn't tell. I grabbed the tailpipe and moved it around just a little bit and it went away. It's a aftermarket exhaust and the pipes are bigger than the stock. Maybe the extra power is causing it to do that, but then why wasn't doing it before. All the pipes are clear from touching any part of the car and the pipes are hooked on these rubber things. Maybe those rubber hangers need to be replaced they do look like they been there for a very long time.
Problem solved. My tailpipe has 2 little screws on the inside and one of them was really loose. I'm going to remove them but for now I tightened it up and now its quiet no more noise.
