Abs and losing electrical issue
Ok,. So I have a 93 Honda Accord with 240,00+ miles on it. It runs great, except for recently. On the way home from work a noticed the abs light flicker on for about a half a second. I didn't think to much of it, but about 10 miles or so it started flickering on and off ( just the abs light). Meanwhile the electrical power and engine power is cutting off in sequence with the light. After about 10 or 15 seconds of this, it runs as normal. Having me scratch my head. When I get home, I pop the hood to look at the connections throughput the engine. Everything seemed ok to me so I go to pull a code if one was stored in the CPU. I get the wire to jump to plug, turn the key and no power at all. No radio, int light, dash lights. Nothing... I take the covers off the fuse and abs power source and chack voltages. They all were ok, as well as the battery. When I go to try the key again, I have power?? Car starts up as normal with no codes stored in the CPU. That's the main issue I have. Being i had a brain fart, I left a rag in the bay when I was changing the oil. When I popped the hood the first time I noticed the rag was lying between the alt and crank pully, but it wasn't jammed or anything?? Im confused and feel dumb at the same time. Would these two issues be tied together? Maybe the rag???
Normally, when I see the ABS start flickering, it's a battery/alternator replacement that needs to happen. Once that alternator can't provide enough power, everything weird starts to come up in the dash.
Yeah I tested the battery and it was ok. The alternator is doing it's job- about 14.5 volts going to the battery. In the mean time of checking all these issues I went ahead and changed my valve cover gaskets, which I've had for about 2 months (<-- got lazy--). The spark plugs wells were pretty saturated with oil, I guess from the 4 inner gaskets inside the cover. Would a misfire cause the electrical issue like this? Being it quit after a few seconds I'd think it wouldn't, but I really don't know.
ABS is sensitive to voltage changes.
If you are having no power/loss of power, more than likely it is the ignition switch is shitting the bed. 200K+miles and 20+years will wear out the plastic switch.
New on is ~$25 from your preferred retailer.
Can test by having the car on, engine running, jiggle the key(not rotate) if the power cuts out, ignition switch. Lots of keys or charms on the key ring will weigh down an exacerbate the problem.
