2009 civic SI air conditioning
I have an 09 SI and I've been having alot of issues with the air conditioning. I have replaced the relay multiple times. That used to fix it but not anymore. I've replaced the high pressure switch, had it vacuum tested and recharged. When the weather is mild it works fine but seems that once it gets over 75 degrees or I'm on the freeway it cuts out and just blows ambient air. Wondering if I could just replace the compressor clutch, do I need a whole new unit or is there something I'm missing.
It is not uncommon for the compressor thermal switch to fail on "K" series type A/C compressors. When your A/C seems to be putting out ambient air... pop the hood and see if the compressor clutch is locked up. If not, you can pour cold water on the top of the compressor (a funnel with a hose helps) while running and see if the clutch locks up... and if so, you have found your problem. I believe you can replace just the thermal switch on the compressor housing itself although I have never done this... I just replace the whole thing since it is a pain to change out.
Also measure the air gap between the compressor clutch and pulley. If the gap is too wide, the compressor coil is unable to pull the armature plate to the pulley, thereby preventing the clutch from engaging.
If the gap is too wide, then remove or replace the shim with a thinner one.
