Built b18c1 in eg hatch. Css block that they assembled with traum pistons eagle rods. Head has 85lb dual valve springs and supertech retainers and valve guides. Has brand new skunk2 LMAs and the valve lash has been checked and double checked, and is placed within oem spec. Has stock gsr cams. Noise sounds like a smacking in the head, only happens a between 2-2500 rpm. Sometimes the sound changes, as in it gets louder or quieter, I can’t get it to make different noises, it just happens. Mostly happens on the down rev, can be heard easily while driving the car. Sounds like a nut bouncing around in the oil pan. I’ve dropped the pan, it was clean, and took apart the pump, it was also clean. Has edlebrock victor x intake with 2200cc injectors. Dizzy is new, and have tried multiple. I’ve taken the rockers apart and made sure the pins looked healthy, and the springs has tension. I’m lost about what this noise is and any help is appreciated. Check your turbo shaft play..

 

Turbo is brand new precision 6266 with no shaft play. The engine has been making this noise since the first start up, which didn’t have the turbo installed.

 

i would recommend calling or emailing that video to Jeff at CSS since he assembled it and see what his thoughts are

 

That's in the head. one or several of the flat tappets is sticking from a bad lost motion assembly .

I've had that happen before. I'll see if I can find a similar with our project car having the same issue.

 

I have talked to Jeff, he inspected the block for me, said it’s still in great shape. He doesn’t know what the noise is but also thinks it’s in the head. I just replaced the LMAs. Not sure what a tappet is, still learning, can you explain what I can check for or anything? Thanks for the help

You can try check inside your distributor to see if the screw didn’t fall out or loose shaft on the distributor...

you can use a long screwdriver/ flathead and put the metal end to the head or wherever then put your ear to the plastic handle piece and rev it to narrow down where it’s coming from.

 

ive used a sethsecope, or whatever it’s called, too much engine noise to narrow it down but I’ll give it another shot and maybe try your way. I don’t think it’s the dizzy, since I’ve tried multiple and the noise is still present. But I’ll check again! Thanks

 

Any parts of the exhaust loose?

 

Shouldn’t be, everything has vbands and is secure, but I will double check again to make sure

 

What LMAs did you use? I think the word that is commonly used here on this forum are "rockers"?..

 

circled below is the LMA, for clarification. Part of the rocker assembly, yeah, but officially not rockers.

 

brand new skunk2 LMA for the b series vtec head.

 

those should work fine, same thing I run myself on my b18c1

 

Taking the head completely apart tonight. Hopefully that gives me a solution. I’ll post what I find

 

Turns out, it was a bad vtec solenoid. Replaced it and the noise went away. Always check the easy stuff first lol

 

what valve springs and retainers are you running?

 

Running supertech dual valve spring 85lbs and the matching retainers, got ferrea 6000 valves
