Default Troubleshooting: Oil Pressure fluctuation issue

Took my car out for a little gas station run today and the oil pressure dropped tremendously. This is the third time ever driving the car but it never dropped like this before. At idle while warming up it was at 30-40 psi and when i got on the main road in town it went to 6-11 PSI!!! While cruising at 2400 rpm and 55 MPH. It is a ERL superdeck 2 B16 with upgraded oil pump gears. Normally at that rpm it’s at least around 30 psi. Also the car is running motul 5W40 full synthetic with a OEM filter. Anyone else ever have this issue?

Gonna be hard to say anything on this if it is the first time in 3 total drives. What I would do is check oil level and monitor. See if it happens again and under what conditions.

Oil pressure should drop a bit as the fluid temps come up... but you should NEVER be 11psi when the engine is above idle speeds... certainly not at 2700 rpm. You will need at least 50psi to make VTEC work, so I think you definitely need to examine the internals for an issue. Clogged pick-up, oil pan too close to pick-up inlet opening, improper bearing clearance, bad oil pressure sending unit... and this is just a start. Too much oil can "foam" the oil and pressures will drop off sporadically... the fact that the pressures are dropping at higher rpm is an issue. Regardless of the oil temperature, the pressures should climb with engine rpm.

yeah going to check the sending unit sometime this weekend with a meter and go from there. It’s weird that it came right back to normal after i turned into my driveway. I should also state it has the Moroso 5.5 oil pan on it.

Quick little video of the oil pressure at start up and after being warm but not driving so no load.

I had fuji bond that came loose and got in the feed to gauge. It read 0, swapped out oil pump, to only find the gauge issue.

yeah i don’t think it’s a gauge issue unless possibly it’s a over active sensor issue. Going to change the oil and check the plug for any debris. This is the first time the car has had motul ran through it so i will be switching to Mobil 1 15w50 and see how it goes.

What are your current bearing clearances and what weight are you using right now?

Add a mechanical oil pressure gauge, mount in dash and compare to your other electric gauge. Probably the easiest quickest troubleshooting.
