1995 Accord Wagon A0YA to MPJA Swap
Hello fellow Honda enthusiasts, hope everyone is having a relaxing day. I just want to start off by saying I'm not by any means a mechanic or an expert on transmissions but I have tinkered with several of them successfully. I am working on my 1995 accord ex 2.2 vtec wagon that had a a0ya in it which I swapped for a mpja that I bought from a jdm importer. I was under the impression that they are almost the same unit apart from several brackets. The transmission shifts a little hard but I assume that this is typical for the mpja as its out of a odyssey and they're known for that. My problem now is that my speedometer doesn't work and the drive indicator light(d4) blinks as I'm driving.
A blinking D4 I think means it won't go into overdrive/4th gear. Have you checked the fundamentals like tranny fluid level, made sure all the connectors are plugged into the sensors, and run a scan to see what errors might be appearing?
Blinking D-4 means there is a transmission code. This can be checked by putting a wireloop in teh diagnostic connector under the glove box and turning the key to run without starting. D4, CEL, SRS, and ABS will blink any codes out to you - there are tables online to decipher it. While not having fully done this swap my self (I do have an MPJA trans sitting here) did you swap over the solenoids and VSS from your old trans as some of the sensors arent quite compatible? Also did you swap over the torque convertor, or did your "newer one come with it and a drive plate (Ody seems to use a different drive plate and convertor rahather than your AOYA trans)" As mentioned before, please check fluid levels, and make sure all the sensors (NM A and B) on the side are not covered in magnetic crud.
The fluid level was good when I filled it but I will go back and check again along with all the connections.

On the MPJA the thing on the back side of the transmission is the PRNDL indicator. It wont hook to anything. The odyssey doesnt have the floor mounted stick, so that is what provides the position the trans is actually sitting in. For people in an accord, its just an extra thing that lingers. Pull the codes and see what arises.
I had a swap done to am MPJA trans in my 94 Accord EX. I let the shop do all the work. I gave them extra solenoids just in case the connectors were different. They did not have to use them, but did swap out the VSS from my old trans. I am not sure why they did this. Forgot to ask. Anyway, the trans was a little sluggish, especially in the 3-4 shift. I changed out the solenoids with no effect. The MPJA ones were not dirty and worked OK. I developed other problems so I changed out the TCU and that made a lot of difference. Now the trans works fine. I still don't know why they changed the VSS because the connectors looked the same.

Hey, sorry for not updating. So I read the codes from ecu and it came up with a code for the vss. After going in to check the connections I discovered that the connector for the vss was just hanging there disconnected(rookie mistake). Reconnected and went for a drive. Transmission shifts, speedo works, and everything is good. Except the shifts are a little to sharp. It's not exactly shifting harsh but you can feel it shift up when accelerating and downshift when slowing down. I suppose this is normal for these trannies so I'm not going to worry about. Thank you everyone who offered advice.
