Stuck in s-drive and now starter issues
I have a 91 accord and taken excellent care of it. I started having and issue with the s-light coming on intermittently and eventually it was stuck. My mechanic advised me it is safe to drive around town but not on the freeway. One day I drove it to the bank and the starter went out. Took it to my mechanic he replaced the starter. When I picked it up the s-light was off , one week later the s-light came back on and one week after that the starter went out again. Took it back to my mechanic, he replaced it with an upgraded starter upon picking it up the s-light was off. One week later the s-light was back on and a week after that the starter went out. Could these two issues be related.? It has now sat in my garage for three months. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
I have three guesses.
1 - Overvoltage to starter. You are going to need to have a meter in there checking what the draw is and see if it seems too high when starting the car.
2 - Starter not disengaging - I would think the starter would just get destroyed if it didn't let go, but maybe it stays running for a while and then finally pops back.
3 - Starter not aligned correctly - I don't know how much this happen today, but I recall seeing this in older cars where it needed to be adjusted.
I cannot think of anything else that could cause destruction of a starter.
