Default Android Auto Maps navigation fail

Problem statement; after connecting phone to car, start to navigate on Android Auto Maps. Destination and route are displayed but navigation is "self-cancelled". It just stops

2018 Accord Touring 2.0T
Samsung Galaxy S9 running Android 9.0 - all the apps are up to date

Vehicle purchased used with 18000 miles October 2019
No issues with Android Auto until January 2020 - main infotainment screen died
After audio unit was replaced (p/n 39450-TVA-A54RM), navigation on Android Auto Maps doesn't work; it starts, but fails - YouTube (
)
2 different S9 phones now have the problem in the Accord
Same phones work fine in a 2017 VW - it's not the phones
I'm not the only one - https://support.google.com/androidau.../8777069?hl=en
Nearest Honda Dealership is clueless. Service adviser actually said these words "what's Android Auto?" and on the work report it said "NOTE: AFTER MARKET NAVIGATION SYSTEMS MAY NOT BE
COMPATIBLE WITH VEHICLE" no joke

There is a workaround that hints at the problem;
connect phone
start navigation from the Honda/Garmin app
go back to AA Maps and it takes over
seems like AA Maps can't initially engage the vehicle GPS - from the Google link, it appears that Android Auto Maps app uses the car GPS, but other apps, like Waze, use the phone GPS

I sent an email to Honda customer relations https://crrs.secure.force.com/service/hondaownerw2c
I now have a case number so we'll see how it goes

I've seen one other owner on driveaccord.net get this problem fixed with a new head unit

If you have had this problem fixed, please post what happened.
If you have the same problem with no solution in sight - e-mail Honda and bug your dealership
No disrespect, but let's not fill up the thread with "me too" comments unless you have something helpful to add - I want this to be helpful later to people with the issue to find the thread and quickly find the solution

Thanks.

My head unit has build number 18AA-1996-001 - HAS the problem.

I've seen one or two owners at other discussion sites get a new head unit recently that fixed the problem - build number 18AA- 2047-001

Honda just came out with the update for the Accord Touring units with the dreaded 18AA-1996-001 build. I just updated it and I can confirm Android Auto (Google Maps, Waze, etc.) now work as intended. The new build is 18AA-2071-001.

Also, although that same build number is the latest for other trim levels, I can confirm the firmwares are indeed different. The update for the Touring trim is 23mb and the one for the EX 28.9mb.
