Distributor fail
Hello everyone call me an idiot cause I know I am. I removed my distributor without marking it and without putting #1 cylinder on TDC. Can someone guide me on what to do to reinstall it now correctly. Thank you
You ll need to remove the spark plug wires and spark plugs out and use a socket and ratchet on the crank bolt to put piston 1 to TDC. Once you do that remove distributor cap off the distributor, then rotate the rotor button to plug #1 and then install the distributor back on ( snug up the 3 bolts to the distributor, don’t tighten all the way just yet )making surethe rotor button is still pointing at plug #1, and install your distributor cap back on. Then install your spark plugs and wires. Lastly get a timing gun ( you can rent at local parts store ). Once you have a timing gun, hook red positive wire to positive terminal on the battery and negative black wire to you negative terminal on battery, then you’ll have another wire that’ll clip on spark plug wire #1.
start your car and use timing light and aim on top of the harmonic balancer, you should see 3 indent marks close together flashing and you’ll also see other 2 indents marks on either side of the 3 indent marks dont worry about the ones on the outside. Focus on the 3 closer together.
First indent mark Closest to the firewall should be 14*, second indent 16*, last indent 18*.
Line up your timing mark on the cover to the second indent 16* by turning the distributor towards the firewall or towards the front of the car in small increments. Then remember to tighten up your distributor bolts and your done.

assuming you have a D16?
you don't need to set to TDC to reinstall your distributor... the tang has an offset so that it can only mate up to the camshaft slot the right way. install with the mount slots centered on the mounting bolts (both in center of slot). you'll be able to start it like this. then set with a timing light after normal operating temp and correct idle speed is confirmed (750rpm ±50). IIRC the procedure by the book says to jumper the service connector under the dash (paper clip works fine) when setting timing.
did you remove the plug wires from the cap?
