OK, here's the story. My 1991 Civic has been getting harder and harder to start. Starter and everything works fine, but I keep having to press much harder on the clutch pedal to engage the safety switch. Beginning to get cramps in my leg, and on a couple of colder mornings it just refused to engage at all.Took it to my mechanic cuz I'm not spry enough to crawl under there any more. He says the bracket that holds the switch or broken and therefore bent. Needs new bracket, but that entails a whole new pedal assembly, and these things seem as scarce as hen's teeth. Found one for $175. Mechanic says it should be around $75. Any suggestions appreciated.
I would be glad to just bypass it, but as I said, I am not spry enough to crawl under there. Mechanic obviously refuses to do it for safety reasons.
All advice appreciated, other than "Just get rid of it." TIA
unbolt (4 bolts) the drivers seat
remove the drivers seat
disconnect the clutch linkage / cable
disconnect the brake linkage
disconnect the throttle linkage
unbolt & remove the bracket
beat the bracket back into shape
stop drill all cracks
weld up all cracks
paint the bracket
re-install the bracket
connect all of the linkages that you disconnected; adjust as required
install new nylon / plastic clutch / brake pedal stopper pads
re-install drivers seat
take for test drive
On my 1991 Honda Civic Si I had to also remove the pin that holds the brake booster to the pedal and pulled out the brake booster about 2 inches from the firewall.
I had to remove my fuse panel and the ducts.
There is a very hard to reach bolt that lies above the ducts and cannot be accessed unless you bend and squeeze the duct(s) out of the way.
I was able to maneuver the pedal assembly out thru one side. If I remember correctly I removed the accelerator pedal and rotated the entire assembly and then came out without a problem.
I just went thru the same journey my clutch pedal assembly broke 2 weeks ago so I struggled to find the pedal assembly I paid $40 then I found one that had cruise control something I would love to add to my car and I found it for $50 you should look on Facebook for local Honda groups or part outs I checked on eBay and they are crazy expensive
You can find em on ebay. Mine was broken, so I just took it out, bent it back into shape and welded it together, plus added some reinforcements to it..
That's basically what I wound up doing when the one I bought from a parts broker wasn't quite right. Now I have one with no safety switch to sell on eBay. How do I figure out the part number and which models it fits?
