Default Ignition Switch

Car is a 94 Accord EX. I just replaced the electrical switch for my ignition. I have heard for years that attaching heavy objects to the key fob will cause the switch to wear out prematurely. When looking at how this assembly is made, I can see that the tumbler mechanism could be damaged, but I don't see any way the electrical part could be affected. It is a totally separate unit and simply attaches to the rest of the mechanism. Did I miss something here?

Also, I bought a replacement assembly from Majestic Honda. No. 35130-SY8-305. It came with the switch, two screws, top strap, tso break-head bolts in addition to the electrical switch. Plus it is cheaper than buying the switch alone. Not cheaper than Rock Auto, but it is OEM Honda. When it comes to electrical parts, I like to stick with Honda.

As the tumbler wears it will no longer rotate on its original axis. Combined with lots of keys/charms/weight, the key will be pulled down and angle the 'T' interface up. This will cause a side loading on the normal axis. Eventually it will be enough to cause the plastic electrical switch components to deflect, and with an older switch the plastic will become brittle, fracture and break. When this happens the switch contacts will no longer make when the key is turned to a given position. The components are directly coupled and wear on one will cause wear on the other, or stress the fingers on the case and casue it to break.
Hondas are not the only make susceptible to this. But are more common as Hondas age a bit more gracefully than other makes/models. Volvos have a similar issue, but it usually does not surface as the lock cylinder itself usually jams up and folks just replace the whole assembly. Electrical goes to pot, owners turn the ignition ON/OFF a few times and jams the cylinder.

That must be some kind of service replacement kit that is not listed under Accords.
35130-SV4-003 is ~$40 Retail from Honda. *Found when searching for ignition switch replacement 94-97 Accord & 97 CL/TL and Prelude.*
35130-SY8-305 is ~$35 Retail from Honda.
Good find, always funny to find you can get more for less from the same seller.
