1997 Honda Civic Hatchback D16Y7
Hello all,
I am new to the Honda scene, and the 4cyl scene as well.
I own several F-body Camaros and have been a major 8cyl player since I got my licence.
I just bought a frankensteined 97 hatchback, with a D16Y7 engine and the Acura 5spd transmission. The guy I bought it from is a good buddy of mine, and he built the whole car himself to be a good little daily driver. Using the good body from one car, and good interior from another car. It has a real carbon fiber intake, lowered on skunk coilovers, has nice 15 inch rims, and probably a lot more I dont even know about. But It's very fun to drive, and I'm loving it.
But it isn't the fastest car. And I'm used to going fast lol.
So I'd like to ask some questions about the D16Y7.
I know a lot of people would probably recomend swapping to a B series, which I believe is just a bigger displacement engine. So if this is the best option for speed, would this engine work with the transmission I have right now? I'm not sure which tranny it is as I know nothing about hondas, but if the b series and d series use the same tranny then that may be an option.
As for the D16Y7, would it be viable to stroke and bore out the engine? Would adding a little turbo be worth it to make it a little faster, while maintaining its reliability and daily driving?
My main goal is to keep this as a daily driver, maintain its reliability, but just make it a little faster.
I may remove the back seat, maybe not.
But right now mechanically it only needs the front wheel bearing replaced, so if the D16Y7 is best the way it is, and the best option being swapping to a B series then I may just leave it.
just looking for some advice and options. Sorry if I'm all over the place.
But as far as turboing goes, would a cheap ebay kit be a good idea? Or would robbing say a junk yard VW stock system or something do just as good? And would bigger injectors be necessary? And how easy/hard would it be to tune this vehicle? I'm not sure what ECM system it has. But in my Camaro it is a soldered in chip where I'd have to send the whole ECM off to have it tuned.
Thanks for any advice
