Default Gas tank protectors

Is it required to put these back on? The filler neck cover makes more sense to put on but the fuel tank cover its self just seems pointless to me. Do you guys run them? If I leave them off to simplify things and make it easier to work on is there any dangers or negatives that come with it? All the hardware for the fuel tank cover broke to so now it's just gonna cost me money to put it back on. Any thoughts?

I'd want it on myself. As many rocks and debris that flies up when driving... I'd want some sort of buffer between it and the metal tank itself.
