Default High beam causes major dash failure

Second hand car has multiple intermittent dash failures.
1. On ignition odometer reads all eights (888888) and Trip A and B at the same time. Additionally, the fuel gauge will read full and the hand brake light will illuminate.
2. On ignition when odometer fails (888888), and head lights are selected to high beam, the dash fails completely (no dash lights and no gauges). I can get the dash to come back to life by starting the car with the lights on.
3. Normal service resumes intermittently and can remain okay for a few days, then will fail.
Any help gratefully received,
Monty, Perth Western Australia,
cheers

2004 Civic 1.7ltr manual

its worth noting that when I bought the car it came with a second dash set that had been repaired at some point. It appears that the problem may not be related to the dash But I’m open to any offers,
cheers
