Will the exhaust of a D16Z6 work with a B16A2?
I have a 94 Del Sol with a B16A2 engine. I need to get my exhaust changed from the cat and backwards because of rust.
The guy at my exhaust shop wants to put on an OEM exhaust from a regular Civic with the D16Z6 engine and claims there won't be any difference in performance. I am by no means an expert in exhaust myself, but is it not true that an exhaust system designed for a ~125HP engine will create restrictions for a 160HP engine and reducing the performance slightly?
Or is the guy right and there is no difference in the properties of a D16Z6 exhaust and B16A2 exhaust?
Best regards

The only reason why the guy is even offering it is he's trying to find a cheap route for you, out the kindness of his heart he offered the civic exhaust he had laying around.

Thank you for reply. He said he would do some custom cutting and welding to make it fit. If he makes the fitment correct, what other issues might I run into?
Today the car runs with a modified exhaust that resonates heavily and basically rings in the ears after a long drive. What I'm looking for is a more comfortable and quiet ride, which is why I asked the exhaust shop for a solution.
I will call him on Monday, but I'm a bit unsure what to ask for if using a civic exhaust would not be sufficient.

They are both 1.6 liters, the exhaust diameters should be relatively the same as they both need roughly the same scavenging requirements.
So you shouldn't really see much in a performance difference. The majority of the scavenging is done from the header design and setup and since that isn't changing, it should run pretty much the same with a different sound if that.

Money is an issue
The current exhaust will probably not pass emission and safety tests and while I feel like doing most (if not all) of the work needed on my car myself, i believe doing it myself with budget parts i will get the same shitty exhaust note i have today.
That's why I went to an exhaust shop and asked for a budget solution and they claimed this will achieve what I am looking for

So you ask the muffler shop for a 'budget solution' and he gave you one. But you want something more than a 'budget solution' because you also asked if it will hinder the b16a2? Am I getting this right?
You are right.
Just because I asked for a budget solution it doesn't mean I wanna sacrifice performance or reliability. That's why I asked for people's opinion here as well.

Exhaust shop isn't trying to screw you over, he's giving you an option. If you need more than that have him fab and weld together something. You just need to tell him what you want instead of asking him what he has. They don't have all day to search what the stock diameter is for the existing piping.
