Easy -- look for the LSD stamp on clutch housing, near the clutch slave cylinder. (likely R)
Medium -- remove an axle and look through the differential hole, empty == LSD(likely R), pin from one side to the other == no LSD(not R)
Difficult -- open the trans and check LSD and synchros.

Okay I will definitely check it out, also is it normal for the s4c to whine a little bit in fifth gear at around 3.5k rpm?

S4C is not a Type R designation... it is from the USDM '99-00 Civic Si and never came from the factory with an LSD. Looking through an axle hole as Relic1 suggested will allow you to identify the differential type. If it appears to have a LSD inside, it will be an aftermarket diff.

CTR transmissions are S4C

I haven't seen one in a long time, but further investigation on my part suggests that I was mistaken... bigjon1378 is correct. This technically makes this designation quite interesting. Internally, the ITR and CTR transmissions use the same sized large diameter ring gear and differential housing size... shared by the GSR, ITR and CTR. The differential and ring gear on a USDM S4C is the smaller diameter variation found in all B16's except the CTR and the LS/GS/RS variants.

I don't know why I was thinking that the CTR case designation was still an S80 like the ITR... they say when you get as old as I am that the mind is the first thing to go.

I don’t know anything about type R transmissions, the guy I got the car from said it’s a s4c type r lsd. He said he paid $1200 for it, it does have a little whine not that loud in 5th gear but he also said it needs the transmission fluid changed.

If it's whining in 5th it may be low or bone dry or it may have been ran dry in the past. If you haved changed the guild or checked the level I'd do so ASAP

Put transmission in neutral and set the brake, engine not running. Jack up one corner so that one front wheel is off the ground and the other one still on the ground. A LSD locks the two sides together so you wouldn't be able to turn the free wheel by hand. If you can turn the wheel by hand it is not LSD.

And like the others said when you hear noise it is not normal, you need to check the fluid immediately.

The whining is not normal. I have a 98 spec , 96 spec, and a em1 transmission. None of them whine. I noticed that the em1 transmission gets tugged on with ruts in the road , I don't experience that as much with the lsd equipped type r transmissions . That is the most notable difference under normal driving in my opinion.

So I went to a mechanic and had them check out my car since it whines in final drive. He mentioned my motors are insanely stiff and that could cause it to whine??? It does have upgraded all aluminum motor mounts. Would this be possible? He did drive it and said the transmission seemed really healthy. Also I don’t know if I mentioned but the guy I got it from said it was rebuilt a couple months ago

Nope, never mentioned. Only that is mentioned though is that he bought the transmission for 1200.
