What’s up guys.. the name is shane, i am NOT new to cars (honda‘s more specifically) nor am i new to engine building/rebuilding, BUT i am new to this page, i often look at the page for forum researching and whatnot but i never decided to join until now because i tend to find post’s from 2010 and under and never anything new which kind of annoys me. I own a 97 coupe w/ B20b P8R head and B16 non lsd trans. The B20 needed a rebuild so i pulled the swap out and i have been working on the engine for about 3 weeks now, disassembling and diagnosing any current existing issues. I am doing a turbo build (staying non-vtec for now as it’s out of my budget) simple piston/rod combo with a built head, spent a little over a week porting the head, it’s going to a machine shop for resurfacing and valve guide replacement. I have had some cams for this head laying around now for about 4-5 months and just bought springs/retainers for it, but here’s my concern... i would hate to put this motor together and reach for my power goal (between 350-400 limiting factor is stock sleeves) and crack a sleeve on the dyno or during a run a month later or a year later (they’re time bombs so you never know when its going to happen), i searched and searched on information on trying to fit a P8R head on a LS block (stronger sleeves). Few people have successfully done it with good results, but i’m unsure of the head gasket to use IF i go this route, the P8R head has the 84mm combustion chamber as the LS sleeve is a 81mm, i can use either head gasket and it will seal but which one will seal best? And if i use a 81mm head gasket the combustion chamber will have a ridge where the head/block meet, if i use a 84mm head gasket there will be ~3 mm of HG material exposed inside the cylinders, will this mess with detonation or air/fuel mixture after/before the burn cycle? 2 or 3 of these setups i have seen on youtube or on a forum use 84mm head gasket but then there are people on forums that say match gasket to block which would only seal 3mm of the combustion chamber on the head? I dont know let me know what you guys think and what y’alls opinion is, will my stock sleeves be okay around 350-400 with a really solid tune? Which head gasket size would be best to match or P8R head on LS block?
