1999 2.3l automatic misfires in three cylinders after several miles.
For the fourth Tuesday in a row, my car had so many misfires I needed to reschedule my appointment. For the second time, I took it to my mechanic. The first time he told me to pull the plugs and check them. Yesterday they were closed at 4pm.
8/28 replaced spark plug tube seals
9/04 replaced spark plugs (which were less than 14 months old)
9/11 replaced the distributor (leaked oil and the points were corroded) and cleaned the wires with electrical parts cleaner and Q-tips
09/18 cleaned the spark plugs and wires with soap and water, dried them with my compressor, and drove home without a problem.
How come the car drives fine for five miles, but then starts misfiring? It only misfires on the cylinders that had the oil leak!

Verify your EGR port in the intake manifold plenum is not clogged.
Verify your valves are correctly adjusted, too tight and it will cause a misfire.

I asked for help everywhere that I could find and had a long list of suggestions, but before chasing further longshots I swapped the cables from my Civic and the misfires mostly went away. I bought a new set for $33.50 and the misfires went away completely. I tested the wires and there was only the tiniest difference from the 15-month-old ones that I removed and they looked exactly the same.
Meanwhile, the ones from my Civic had high resistance. If I ever get to work on it I will replace those.
