new aftermarket ecm and now car has trouble starting
hey guys, i just replaced my ECM in my 95 accord ex 2.2L, it started up and ran fine the first few times it started, but when i tried to leave work, the car would not start and i had to get a jump. I can hear the car turning over but it wont actually start up unless i floor the gas. Could it be my starter or did i not do something properly when i installed the new one. There are no engine codes that came up. Also, i drove through a lot of water so did i possibly short something out?
When did you drive the car through alot of water? How much? How soon after driving through the water did your starting problem start?
When the car first had problems starting, what sort of starting problem did it have? Did the engine turn over? (spin and sort of sound like it was running)? Or did it have an electrical sort of problem where the starter would not engage with the engine or where the starter was not turning the engine? If you "got a jump" to get it started and that worked then it sounds like you may have a charging or electrical problem where either the battery doesn't have enough power or where for whatever reason the starter is not getting enough power to turn the engine over. This could be caused by corrosion or a poor electrical connection, a bad starter, a bad battery or by something the water did.
Let us know,

Okay, so by re installing the original ECM, the no start problem went away. Now my question is, the aftermarket ECM has to be programmed to the car correct? and how do i do that?
No, the 95 ECM does not need to be programmed to the car/ignition. Unless it is not the proper ECU for the engine.
What "aftermarket" ECU are you trying to install, and why?

What is the code on the #'s sticker on the side of the ecu case?
GhostAccord-"What "aftermarket" ECU are you trying to install, and why?"
He didn't say anywhere that he was trying to install an aftermarket ecu, I think its a used oem ecu
The ecu might be for a different transmission option or another country's market or even a car with a different motor or trim.
If its the right ecu then there might be a loose terminal or bad wiring connection, it could be intermittent and could explain why disconnecting the "new" ecu and connecting the old one worked, it may have just been a terminal.
Typically there isn't going to be an internal fault with an ecu but it possible, this case though would mean something internally wrong that its intermittent and is related to the starting of the engine which isn;t typical of ecu's.

okay, i did not specify, im sorry. I bought a Cardone ECM because the OE had corrosion on the board. The problem i was trying to fix was a code 9 (CYP sensor error), and after changing the distributor 4 times already, the Honda instructor at my school suggested that its most likely the ECM that failed, so i bought a new one. I placed it in, and it ran fine for the first 10 or so times that i started it up, then it failed. Now I think i remember reading a technical service bulletin that talked about ECM's locking up the car if they are not programmed correctly, i just dont remember if it applied to my car or not.
