1999 2.3l 5-speed oil and misfires in three cylinders.
I had noticed an occasional misfire, but suddenly it got progressively worse last Tuesday as I drove from one job to another. Before I knew it, I did not think that I could make it, and had a CEL. I pulled over, asked to reschedule, and pulled up the codes on my phone as I drove to my mechanic, just grateful that I was able to go while he was open.
He told me to pull the plugs and check back if I still needed to help. Crazily, I had expected to exchange money for goods and services.
I limped back home and it seemed like the engine was especially hot. I doubt that misfires helped at all, but I am sure the engine was hotter because it needed to work extra hard.
It took a couple of hours to cool down. I pulled the plugs and the ones from the misfiring cylinders were covered with oil. I pulled the valve cover and replaced the tube seals. At 2:40am I started the car and she seemed to run smoothly. On Saturday I pulled the plugs again and cleaned the last of the oil the best that I could.
I noticed an occasional misfire, but made it to that family just fine, but as I left to drive to my next client, I had the same experience as last week. I limped home, borrowed a car, bought a shop fan, and the plugs looked a bit dirty, but not nearly as bad as last week.
Eric the Car guy says to replace the top seals and check for leaks a month later. I do not know that I have had any leaks in a week, it is possible that I missed enough oil to cause a problem, but wouldn't it have burned, instead of getting worse?
I sprayed the plugs and tubes with more carburetor cleaner and it hardly seemed to do anything. The bottom of the tubes look dirty. I soaked the plugs with 91% isopropyl alcohol and they look much cleaner. I will install them in the morning and see how the engine runs and the exhaust looks. The plugs and wires are less than fourteen months old. The plugs are the ones that Honda calls for. The wires are NGK. If necessary I will replace the plugs, I just want to ensure that I fix the oil leak first. If I later find oil at the bottom of the tubes, but not the top, I will remove the rocker arm and replace those seals, but it seems there are many ways for that procedure to go wrong.
Am I missing anything? I just want my car back on the road!
Thank you very much! Have a great day!
