I have all new parts and the motor is set at tdc and the cams are obviously lined up. buuuuttttt..... the tb is off by a half or a tooth or gear. What do i do in this instance? Is it a wrong or bad tb? I can roll the intake cam back to get the belt to fit, but then i have slack between the intake and exhaust and then my lines are not lined up.
I don't see where i'm doing much different than the videos. I thought that when i had the cams lined up that the belt would just slide on with minimal slack. But i will try this again.
You need to learn to do the timing belt properly, watch these vids the same applies to the vtec B series as well.
Success! a million rep points for you! I had the concept down but a couple key steps made the difference. Reading a manual or other instructions can be confusing for me. Watching someone in person or a video makes a difference for me.
There was a lot of slack. Once i did the sequence after the belt was on, it was tight and lined up. After the belt was on, i didn't have tension on the tensioner which is the step i missed.

Thanks a ton.
yup im the same way, I show these vids to every one cause this guy is very meticulous in the vids and shows everything slow and step by step, I too brushed up on this vid before doing my TB and water pump on my B series.

That was the first thing I was going to ask, if you had tensioned the belt yet.
This was plan b if i was planning to spend more time on it. Watching the videos using the cam lock almost made me wait to do it. When i rotated the motor 6x, everything was lined up.

When reading the manual, i don't recall seeing this step. I knew i was following most of the instructions but as soon as i put tension on it, the belt was tight as i was turning it. I knew the slack at the top was too much.

I thought the cam gear lock tool only works for b series vtec. But you should be able to fit two small allans for the nonvtec head to prevent the cams from turning

Buy some 5.5 or 6mm punches for the cams. It specifies in the FSM. Allen keys don't fit as nice. Plus, it's always nice to have all the SSTs to do the jobs like the pros

Yeah I recall being additional play with the allens, I had to use it in a pinch when I did a timing belt on a b18b1 and a friend and I was fighting with the belt

I think they should work for non vtec as well. These lock tools help allot it made my timing belt job easy, held the cams as I put the new belt on, One thing that can happen is the crank or the cams will rotate and the timing belt is always off spec.
yup I don't think they work on Vtec heads so this type of tool is used, but on non vtec I believe the holes are there to use a drill bit or pin to lock them in and in his case will be his only option if any cause these tools say for Vtec models.
i'm a real dumb mother ******........ i didn't put the plastic thing under the timing belt and cam gears. To be fair, i didn't take it apart. So many bad words were yelled. Ears are bleeding.
